以下は笑い話で一読後ニヤリとしていればよい類のものですがこれをまじめに英語で解釈してみませんか?英会話の話題としてもご利用ください。

Here is a story Vice President Walter Mondale likes to tell about how he became Jimmy Carter’s running mate:

“Four of us were invited to Plains.  The first to go was John Glenn.  He wanted Jimmy to know that he was perfectly at home there, so he said, ‘Jimmy, I’m anxious to see those trees your peanuts grow on.’

Then Ed Muskie dropped in and said, ‘Jimmy, I’m really anxious to have some of those blue-eyed peas for dinner.’

Then Frank Church came and said, ‘Jimmy, I’m the first guy in my family to come to Plains since my great-uncle General Sherman passed through 100 years ago.’

“When I showed up, Rosalyn said to me, ‘Just keep your mouth shut, Mondale, and the job’s yours.’”
