Ever since he could remember, Fred had been told at every opportunity that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been able to walk on water to the bar across the lake for their first legal drinks. Naturally, he grew up with the conviction that the same thing would happen to him when he reached the legal age. The day had finally come. He had turned 21 years old. So he rowed out to the middle of the lake and stepped out of the boat. His expectation of being supported by the surface of the lake was mercilessly betrayed and he nearly drowned.

He managed to get home and asked his grandmother why he couldn’t walk across the lake like his father, and his father before him.

She explained that it was because they were all born in January, while Fred was born in August.

Had Fred’s family members pulled his leg all along? No, only he was convinced that he would magically be able to walk on the lake when he turned 21 in the middle of the summer.
