A priest, a minister, and a rabbi were playing poker. Playing poker without betting money is the dullest thing in the world. Of course they were betting. Then they got raided by the police.
The officer asked the priest, “Were you gambling?” The priest pictured himself preaching against telling a lie at his church countless times. If he followed his own words, however, he would be arrested. “Why not be realistic, and ask God for forgiveness, just this time?”, he thought, and told the officer, after a silent prayer, that he hadn’t bet.
The minister who was asked next followed suit.
The rabbi, who was the last to be asked, said a prayer in his mind before answering as the other two. But, his prayer was not for forgiveness like theirs. He said a prayer of thanks that he was the last person the officer asked, and said, “With whom could I bet? I have only two opponents, and they are both saying that they didn’t bet, you see?”
This way, only the rabbi could keep his lie to himself without telling a lie to anyone.
